Question 15

x refers to the exact number of dollars saved after installing the fan. Those of you who are insecure about math, may be immediately "put off" when you see "x". But, this is not a hard question.

Statement (1) alone: It is completely irrelevant. The cost of the fan is irrelevant to the dollars saved. The answer cannot be determined from statement (1) alone.

(A) and (D) must be eliminated.

Statement (2) alone: Remember that the question is asking for the specific number of dollars saved. This is different from knowing the percentage saving. If the heating cost was $100, then a savings of 24% is $24. If the heating cost was $1000, then a savings of 24% is $240. Since the exact amount of the savings cannot be determined from statement (2) alone, (B) must also be eliminated.

This leaves us with (C) and (E). Since the answer cannot be determined from either statement alone, we must consider statements (1) and (2) together.

Statements (1) and (2) together: We are no further ahead.

Since, the answer to the question cannot be determined, the answer to this question is (E).
