Question 21

This is a basic arithmetic question.

Mathematical Solution

The number 5.1 may be thought of as: 5 and 10/100.

The number 5.3 may be thought of as: 5 and 30/100.

The distance between these two numbers is:

30/100 - 10/100 = 20/100.

1/4 of 20/100 = 5/100 which is equal to .05.

If we add .05 to 5.1 we have: 5.1 + .05 = 5.15.

Hence, the answer is (B).

Multiple Choice Is Your Friend Solution

(E) is wrong. Obviously the right answer must be between 5.1 and 5.3.

(C) and (D) are wrong. 1/2 of the distance between 5.1 and 5.3 is 5.2. Since 1/4 is less than 1/2 the answer must be less than 5.2.
